Obituary of Margaret C. Glisson

Margaret Carney Glisson (Peg), 72, of Pittsford, NY passed away on June 19, 2020 in Rochester, NY. Funeral service will be held at St. Joseph’s Church on June 26, 2020 at 11:00 with Reverend James Schwartz officiating. Interment will be held privately for the family at White Haven Memorial Park. The family invites you to pray the Rosary with them at 3:00 pm on Facebook at St. Joseph’s Penfield. Visitation will be held at Jennings Funeral Home on June 25, 2020 from 4-7 pm. Peg is survived by her husband, Thomas of Pittsford, her children Kelly (Tim) Foerg and Matthew (Colleen) Glisson, and her grandchildren Jeffrey, Courtney, Katherine, Clare, and Ethan. Peg was born in Ticonderoga, NY to Richard and Jane Carney on December 9, 1947. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from LeMoyne College and a Master of Library Science from Syracuse University, which enhanced her life-long passion for libraries and reading that started with her mother who was also a librarian. Peg focused on children’s literature as a librarian for Pittsford Central Schools, Webster Central Schools, Penfield Public Library, and Central Square Central Schools. Believing that building a love of reading in children could truly change the world, Peg pursued ways to increase her impact on literacy and ensure every child had access to public libraries. She was a member of the Genesee Storytellers, an editor of reference tools, a reviewer for School Library Journal, and in retirement served as President of Friends and Foundation of the Rochester Public Library. Peg was committed to building a strong family. She prioritized spending time together and making sure that time was meaningful and fun. From the day to day of family dinner, sports, and church to family trips to the Adirondacks, the Finger Lakes, Cleveland, St. Louis, New York City, Disney World, and more, Peg taught us the value of being together and how life is rich and full. A key element of life’s richness for Peg was her faith in God that she loved to share through faith formation in young people and adults. That faith spilled over into her service efforts for the larger world by building libraries for all and welcoming refugees by volunteering at Mary’s Place. In recognition of Peg and Tom’s commitment to others, their alma mater, LeMoyne University, gave them the Ignatian Award for Community Service in 2019 In lieu of flowers, her family wishes to honor Peg’s legacy through contributions to areas Peg was passionate about, libraries for all and being men and women for others.
